For a long time now I’ve been thinking that I must teach Bringing to Mind the Qualities of the Three Jewels. Understanding refuge and bodhichitta is crucial because they are the core of the Buddha-Dharma. Refuge is essential for the entirety of beginning, interim, and final practices. This text elucidates the meaning of refuge and its implementation in practice. Whether or not we have knowledge of the meaning conveyed within the text determines whether or not our mind turns to the dharma, and whether or not the dharma becomes the path. This is why I’ve been looking for the opportunity to give these teachings. I encourage all of you to put as much effort as possible into making the time to participate each month.
With much love to all of my students,
Within the Buddhist tradition both the temporary and ultimate source of refuge are the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. If we develop wisdom-
understanding of them, we will come to realize how relying on these three jewels is a source of protection from suffering and how they are not misleading, or fallible. Furthermore, if we know the meaning and classifications of taking refuge, it will lead us to greater confidence in the dharma, our practice will become more profound, a firm foundation for the entire path will be established, and understanding the way in which, within Buddhism, one comes to cultivate a non-judgmental view will be cultivated. This knowledge is a source of inconceivable qualities and insight. A sutra of the Buddha Shakyamuni, Bringing to Mind the Qualities of the Three Jewels conveys with few words the complete essential points of meaning.
